B/96-driving licence

The B/96 driving licence is an extension to the Category B driving licence that allows a drive a vehicle combination with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) exceeding 3 500 kg but not exceeding 4 250 kg.

B/96 driving licence requires only a driving test – no theory test or vehicle handling test is required. Driving lessons at a driving school are not mandatory; however, we recommend at least one driving lesson to ensure you are well prepared for the driving test.

The B/96 licence is a cost-effective option when you need slightly increased towing capacity with lighter requirements than the Category BE licence.

The B/96 driving licence is an extension to the Category B driving licence that allows the towing of heavier vehicle combinations. With this licence, you may drive a vehicle combination with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) exceeding 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg.
The B/96 licence is intended for experienced drivers who already hold a Category B licence and require greater towing capacity than the standard B licence allows, for example for caravans, boat trailers, horse trailers, or car transport trailers.
Please ensure that the maximum authorised masses of the vehicle combination do not exceed the limits specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Limitations Compared to the BE Licence

The B/96 licence does not provide the same towing capacity as the Category BE licence. Under B/96, the maximum authorised mass of the vehicle combination is limited to 4,250 kg, whereas with a Category BE licence the total combination mass may exceed this limit, subject to vehicle manufacturer restrictions.
This limitation may pose a challenge for drivers who regularly transport heavy loads, such as large horse trailers or vehicle combinations intended for professional use.
In addition, the Category BE licence covers all vehicle combinations permitted under the B/96 licence and offers greater flexibility for different towing and load requirements.
The Category BE licence is a more comprehensive option in situations where higher towing capacities or more demanding weight limits are required. For this reason, it may be advisable to assess the advantages and limitations of each licence category in relation to your individual needs.

The course includes:

one (1) driving lesson using the driving school’s vehicle combination (short, practical instruction)
use of the driving school’s car for one driving test
use of the driving school’s trailer for one driving test

Authority fees

Authority fees are paid directly to the local Ajovarma service point – not to the driving school.

If you want to get a B/96 combination licence, you need a permit to upgrade your driving licence. You can apply for it only at a service point of Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma.

When do you need a B/96 licence?

You need a B/96 licence when the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the vehicle combination exceeds 3500 kg but does not exceed 4250 kg. This is a practical option, for example, for towing caravans or larger trailers.

With a B/96 licence, you are permitted to drive vehicle combinations consisting of a Category B towing vehicle (maximum authorised mass up to 3500 kg) and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kg. The total maximum authorised mass of the combination may range from 3500 kg to 4250 kg.
