Instruction process in passenger car course

1. Sign up for our passenger car course

Sign up for a suitable category B driving licence course easily on our website, or with the help of our customer service.

You will receive an email by the next day at the latest with instructions and your login details for the learning platform. After you have enrolled, we will contact you to go through the course progression and basic practices, and to agree on how driving lessons will be booked. We recommend starting the theory studies and preparing for the theory test immediately after enrolling.

Immediately after enrolling, we recommend installing the CAP-Autokoulu app on your phone. The CAP app will guide you through the course, and you can use it to book driving lessons and easily stay in touch with your own instructor.

2. Apply for a driving licence permit

A driving licence permit is required for obtaining a driving licence, and it is issued by Traficom. The application is submitted at an Ajovarma service point, which is Traficom’s service provider. Under certain conditions, you can also apply online via Traficom’s service. Check the conditions and access Traficom’s online service here.

If you do not have a previous driving licence or a photo ID, you must provide two passport photos as attachments to the application (electronic photos cannot be used for a paper application) – generally, no other attachments are required. If you have a previous driving licence, your handwritten signature is sufficient for the application. This is also a good time to update the photo on your driving licence.

Talk to your doctor about the need for a medical certificate if you have or have had any diseases, injuries or symptoms that affect your driving health.

We recommend submitting the permit application at the beginning of the course. You can start driving instruction even before applying for the permit, but you will need the permit to book the theory test.

A driving licence permit can be issued at the earliest at the age of 16, and it is valid for three years.

3. Take part in the training

Your learning will progress best if you start the course with the theory studies. We recommend completing the EAS theory lessons first, along with the required self-study assignments. Book your first driving lesson early in the course and continue completing the theory studies at the same time.

Theory lessons

Online lessons are delivered in Finnish and subtitled in English.

All theory lessons are completed remotely as online training. Log in to the learning platform using the credentials we will send you by email no later than the day after you enrol. In the learning platform, you can complete self-study assignments, read the textbook, and practise for the theory test.

The theory lessons consist of two sets:

  1. EAS training (First Driving Licence Course): 4 theory lessons (if you already have a previous driving licence, you do not need to complete the EAS lessons again)
  2. Risk Recognition Training: 4 theory lessons

We offer a free support lesson for the theory test. You can find more information in the CAP app or on the homepage of the Webauto learning platform.

Driving lessons

Driving lessons begin with simulator sessions, which you can book yourself via the learning platform or the CAP app, or by contacting the driving school.

The PIN codes needed for the simulator driving lessons can be found in the CAP app. With the PIN code, you can enter the remotely monitored simulator room and start the simulator. During your first lesson, your instructor will introduce you to how to use the simulator. The following sessions will proceed according to the simulator’s instructions. If needed, you can get help from the remote supervision team and, during office opening hours, also from staff on site.

Driving instruction is always planned according to the course you have chosen. The amount of driving instruction can be supplemented with additional driving lessons based on your needs and skill level. Our professional instructors will support you throughout your learning.

4. Take the theory test

The theory test is taken at an Ajovarma service point, an examination provider authorised by Traficom.

Before the theory test, you must have applied for a driving licence permit and completed the four-hour EAS training included in the theory lessons (if you do not have a previous driving licence). The EAS training certificate is delivered to Ajovarma electronically, so you do not need to have a physical paper copy. However, we recommend bringing the certificate with you in electronic form. You can download the certificate from your learning platform.

You can book the theory test yourself through Ajovarma’s booking service. You can find our driving school in the booking service under the name CAP-Group Oy. Once you have successfully passed the theory test, inform the driving school. This way we know to book the driving test and any remaining driving lessons immediately after the approved theory test. The driving test appointment is always booked through the driving school.

You can take the theory test at the earliest one month before you turn 18. If you have an approved age exemption permit, you can take the theory test at the earliest on your 17th birthday. Read more about the age exemption permit.

We also recommend completing the 4 theory lessons of the Risk Recognition Training before the theory test, as the test also assesses skills related to risk management.

You must bring a photo ID to the theory test and, if needed, the EAS certificate (available in the student’s learning platform). The theory test fee can be paid either via the booking payment link sent to your email or on site when you arrive for the test.

5. Pass the driving test and congratulate yourself on your new driving licence

Just like the theory test, the driving test is taken at an Ajovarma service point.

The driving test appointment is always booked through the driving school!

You can take the driving test once you have passed the theory test, completed all driving lessons included in your course package, and reached the age of 18 (or 17 with an age exemption permit).

The driving test ensures that you are able to identify risk factors, assess risks, and evaluate your own actions and their impact on road safety.

Please note that the driving examination takes place in traffic and you are the responsible driver. You should only take the driving test when you really feel that you are ready for it. Learning traffic skills is individual and the feedback you get from your instructor is a valuable indicator of whether you need more practice before taking the driving test.

When going to the examination, you need:

  • Valid photo ID
  • E100 form (certificate of instruction received)
  • Certificate of Risk Recognition Training (Your instructor will take care of these certificates when you go to the driving test.)
  • Age exemption permit (if you are taking the driving licence under an age exemption permit)
  • Driving test fee

Make sure that you have paid for the driving test via the payment link you received at the time of booking. If the payment has been made well in advance, you do not need a payment receipt with you.

After a passed examination, you will receive a temporary driving licence. The final driving licence will arrive later by post.

Now you are ready to continue learning independently, driving safer every day. You can still contact the driving school if you feel that you need more lessons, for example after a long pause or if you want additional confidence in some aspect of driving.
