What happens on a motorcycle course (A1, A2, A)

1. Sign up for our motorcycle course

Sign up for a suitable motorcycle course easily on our website or with the help of our customer service.

You will receive instructions and login details for the learning environment by email no later than the next day. After you sign up, we will contact you and go through the basic procedures for progressing through the course.

We recommend starting the theory studies and preparing for the theory test immediately after signing up for the course.

2. Apply for a driving licence permit

TA driving licence permit is required for obtaining a driving licence, and it is issued by Traficom. The application is submitted at an Ajovarma service point, which is Traficom’s service provider. Under certain conditions, you can also apply online via Traficom’s service. Check the conditions and access Traficom’s online service here.

If you do not have a previous driving licence or a photo ID, you must provide two passport photos as attachments to the application (digital photos cannot be used for a paper application) – generally, no other attachments are required. If you have a previous driving licence, your handwritten signature is sufficient for the application. This is also a good time to update the photo on your driving licence.

Talk to your doctor about the need for a medical certificate if you have or have had any diseases, injuries or symptoms that affect your fitness to drive.

We recommend submitting the permit application at the beginning of the course. You can start driving instruction even before applying for the permit, but you will need the permit to book the theory test.

A driving licence permit can be issued at the earliest one year before you reach the required age for driving, and it is valid for three years.

3. Start with theory lessons

If the course includes theory instruction, the theory lessons are always completed before starting the driving lessons.

All theory lessons are completed remotely as online training. Log in to the learning environment using the credentials we will always send you no later than the day after you sign up. In the learning environment, you can complete self-study assignments, read the textbook, and practise for the theory test.

A1, A2 and A motorcycle courses:

The motorcycle courses do not include licence-category-specific theory lessons.

If you do not have a previous driving licence, you must complete the EAS training (First Driving Licence Course), which consists of four online theory lessons. If you already have a previous driving licence (e.g. a moped or passenger car licence), you do not need to complete the EAS training again.

A2 and A upgrade courses:

If you are upgrading your motorcycle licence category, the number of theory lessons depends on the course you choose. If you have selected the Varma upgrade course, you must complete two online theory lessons, and the course also includes 5 hours of driving instruction. The Tutkinto upgrade course does not include any theory lessons.

4. Take the theory test

The theory test is taken at an Ajovarma service point, an examination provider authorised by Traficom.

Before the theory test, you must have applied for a driving licence permit and completed the four-hour EAS training included in the theory lessons (if you do not have a previous driving licence). The EAS training certificate is delivered to Ajovarma electronically, so you do not need to have it as a physical paper copy. However, we recommend bringing the certificate in electronic form. You can download the certificate from your learning environment.

You can take the theory test at the earliest one month before you meet the age requirement for the licence category.

You will only take the theory test if you are completing the full driving examination.

You can book the theory test yourself through Ajovarma’s booking service. You can find our driving school in the booking service under the name CAP-Group Oy. Once you have successfully passed the theory test, inform your local office. You can find the contact details for the offices here. This way, we know to book the driving lessons and the driving test immediately after the approved theory test. The handling test and driving test appointments are always booked through the driving school. Please note that motorcycle driving lessons or tests cannot be booked through the national customer service.

You must bring a photo ID to the theory test. The theory test fee can be paid either via the booking payment link sent to your email or on site when you arrive for the test.

5. Taking your driving lessons

The pace and booking of driving lessons are agreed on a case-by-case basis. You can start driving instruction once you have completed any theory lessons included in the course. We will contact you before the driving lessons begin and agree on the practical arrangements.

Driving instruction is always delivered according to the course you have chosen and is planned individually for each student. The amount of driving instruction can be supplemented with additional driving lessons as needed. Our professional instructors will support you throughout your learning.

6. Take the handling and traffic driving examination

The handling test is taken at a location designated by Ajovarma. If you are a driving school student, the driving school will take care of the test arrangements for you and make sure you know where to go and when. The driving test usually starts from the handling test location if the tests are taken on the same occasion.

You can take the handling test and driving test as follows: A1 category: after you have turned 16, A2 category: after you have turned 18, and A category: after you have turned 24.

The handling test consists of five tasks: low-speed tasks, avoidance, gates, braking and immediate start, and effective braking. You can only take the driving test after you have successfully passed the handling test.

You must have suitable riding gear for the handling test: a helmet, jacket, protective long trousers, gloves and footwear, which you will receive from your CAP-Autokoulu driving school.

Please note that the driving test takes place in traffic and you are the responsible driver. You should only take the driving test when you really feel that you are ready for it. Learning traffic skills is individual, and the feedback you get from your driving instructor is a valuable indicator of whether you may need more practice before taking the driving test.

Bring to the test:

  • Valid photo ID
  • E100 form (certificate of driving instruction received) from the driving school.
  • Make sure that you have paid the fees for the handling test and driving test via the payment link you received at the time of booking. If the payment has been made well in advance, you do not need to bring a receipt.

The instructor will take care of the certificate of driving instruction received when you go to the test, if your course has included driving lessons. If you bring the certificate yourself, you can print the form here.

After a passed test, you will receive a temporary driving licence. The final driving licence will arrive later by post.

Now you are ready to continue learning safe driving independently. You can still contact the driving school if you feel that you need more driving instruction, for example after a long pause or if you want additional confidence in some aspect of driving.
