An age exception permit can only be granted for special reasons. The permit is granted at Traficom’s discretion. The application for the exception permit should be submitted by the young person’s guardian.
An age exception permit for a car driving licence can be granted to a 17-year-old if the young person’s travel to school, work, workplace education and training or a leisure activity is particularly difficult without a car. The average processing time for applications is 4,5 months.
In addition, the assessment may take into account unforeseen changes in the situation of a family living in the same household (e.g. illness or death of a parent or other family member with a driving license) and the travel and transportation needs of a family living in the same household related to securing their livelihood and taking care of essential matters.

You can only apply for an age exception permit for special reasons and at the earliest when the young person is aged 16 years and 8 months.
Traficom will grant a permit at the earliest when the young person is 16 years and 9 months old. The young person may take the theory test after turning 17. Read the instructions and ensure that the special reasons apply to you.
You can register for a driving school even if the official permit has not yet been issued. However, we recommend that you wait for the official decision before starting driving lessons.
